Verify an online computer science program by confirming the institution’s accreditation status in two primary records: the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs and the directory maintained by the institution’s accreditor. DAPIP records the institution, its accrediting agency, and accreditation information in the federal database. The accreditor directory confirms the status directly from the body that grants accreditation.
Checking both records is safer than relying on an institution’s own description. If the two sources do not align, treat the status as unresolved until the discrepancy is clarified through the accreditor or federal database.
Understand what CHEA does and does not tell you
The Council for Higher Education Accreditation provides accreditor-recognition context. It can help confirm whether an accrediting body is recognized. CHEA is not the controlling source for a specific institution’s accreditation status. Use DAPIP and the accreditor’s own directory for institution-level status.
Institutional accreditation versus programmatic accreditation

After the accreditation and federal-profile checks, the program’s own materials carry the details that affect enrollment planning.
